Flooring Creates Sparks at Electricity House

The stunning stairway and entrance hall at the iconic Electricity House in Bristol has been painstakingly re-created by National Federation of Terrazzo, Marble and Mosaic Specialists (NFTMMS) member Zanetti & Company Ltd. “This is a superb example of the high quality of skills and craftsmanship for which Federation members are renowned,” commented NFTMMS Secretary Brian James.

Electricity House is an exciting development of luxury penthouse apartments over two floors. The building, originally designed by the acclaimed Architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s, has been restored to its former glory reinstating and enhancing its celebrated art deco style while incorporating contemporary features for modern living.

Zanetti & Company’s craftsmen worked alongside contractor Crest Nicholson and HGP Architects in the refurbishment which included a cleverly embedded terrazzo logo within the entrance. Due to the speed of works required, Zanetti used Eco.mmunity 600 x 600 x 12mm terrazzo tiles with 1mm joints, polished and sealed on completion. These were laid in three colours on the staircase and main entrance.

“Eco.mmunity offers innovative terrazzo solutions for floors, stairs and other hard surfaces and uses recycled materials with minimum impact on the environment,” commented David Zanetti. “One of the other challenges we faced was that the old building had different levels with new screed so by choosing to use Schluter Ditra matting in all floor areas, it has proved to be a good decision with no cracks in any tiles to date.”

In addition to the terrazzo floor, the architects worked particularly hard to restore other features of the building including the grand front door on the bullnose of the façade.

The NFTMMS represents companies which wish to maintain and improve the standards of craftsmanship and technical control on which the industry depends. It includes organisations involved in terrazzo, mosaic, marble, granite, limestone and quartz and NFTMMS members freely offer technical advice and assistance with specifications.
