Terrazzo and Mosaic Staircase Takes Somerset House To New Heights

A complete restoration of the staircase at the revitalised Somerset House building in central Birmingham has been undertaken by National Federation of Terrazzo, Marble and Mosaic Specialists (NFTMMS) member Advance Terrazzo & Tile Systems Ltd.

“The work of Advance Terrazzo in this project shows the skills and technical standards for which Federation members are renowned,” commented NFTMMS Secretary Brian James.

“Our company was chosen as the terrazzo contractor due to our involvement in a number of similar projects and for our extensive experience within the terrazzo industry,” commented Advance Terrazzo’s managing director Adrian Pellarin.

The grand staircase at Somerset House covers 19 flights with associated landings. Over the years it has suffered periods of neglect as well as severe damage due to being overcovered with other finishes. The work Advance Terrazzo undertook included restoring all damaged areas with new insitu terrazzo and replacing all missing non-slip mosaic tesserae to the step treads. The stairway then required re-grinding, polishing and sealing culminating in a stylish and beautiful look coupled with a hardwearing and durable surface suitable for heavy-duty regular foot traffic.

Somerset House is perfectly located in the heart of Birmingham's central business district, just a few minutes' walk to both New Street and Snow Hill train stations. Originally built in 1936, the building has an attractive stone facade, large glazed areas and detailed stone carvings. It provides 40,000 sq ft of office accommodation over a ground, six upper floors and a basement.

Advance Terrazzo worked alongside developers Circle Properties and main contractor Avondale Interiors.

The NFTMMS represents companies which wish to maintain and improve the standards of craftsmanship and technical control on which the industry depends. It includes organisations involved in terrazzo, mosaic, marble, granite, limestone and quartz and NFTMMS members freely offer technical advice and assistance with specifications.
